Real World Ready

Seventh graders spray paint on their stencils to communicate quick, no-hate messages
Real World Ready is not a slogan. It’s what we believe.

Too often, education shields children from life beyond the classroom. Many schools are literally walled off from the communities around them. But children who never engage with the wider world aren't prepared to navigate it. Trying to insulate your child from reality means they are at its mercy. The best way to protect them is to prepare them.

That’s what St. Paul’s does.

And it’s not just your child that’s at stake. It’s our collective future, too. Children who experience the real world–the good and the hard–and learn to engage with it are better equipped to change it for the better. We prepare citizen scholars who meet the world with confidence, compassion, and agency. We master content and solve for the right answer. We learn how to listen and speak with care, collaborate with others, and lead with purpose. We expect students to engage when things are hard, unfamiliar, or uncomfortable—not to retreat, deflect, or decide it’s “not my problem.” This is how learners become capable, connected, and ready to shape the world they inherit. This is what it means to be Real World Ready.

Most importantly, it’s about character, courage, and community–values that are lived, not just proclaimed. We’re grassroots, down to earth, real. We pioneered Oakland as our classroom because learning should not happen inside a bubble. That's why our students learn alongside community partners, present their ideas publicly, and see Oakland as an extension of the classroom. Real World Ready students seek challenges, work hard, persevere, and see things through.

So if you want your child to develop character, embrace difference, and be ready to meet reality—with confidence, compassion, and courage—then Real World Ready is for you. St. Paul’s is for you.

The world needs young people who are Real World Ready. That's who we're here to help raise.
