In 2017, Oakland Magazine recognized St. Paul’s Episcopal School as the best private elementary school and best middle school in Oakland. While many independent schools can be perceived as pristine buildings behind gates, that feeling of exclusivity does not align with our school’s values.
St. Paul’s is proudly located in the heart of Oakland, and the City is part of our extended campus. Our excellent faculty and staff enthusiastically take our youngest students to the local YMCA for swimming with safety top of mind, our third graders annually lead the bird census at Lake Merrit, our sixth graders track and publicize trash patterns around the neighborhood to raise awareness in the neighborhood, and our eighth graders participate in service learning opportunities at local organizations. Our students learn about their city and have a level of appreciation for and comfort with their surroundings that is extraordinary. Additionally, all grade levels venture out to the vast green areas of Lake Merritt and the Veteran’s Memorial building for lunch, physical education, and our engaging annual Olympiad games.
When Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff came to campus to acknowledge the wonderful work St. Paul’s does in and for our community, she helped validate our long standing tradition of being fully engaged with our city. St. Paul’s is very much a city school. Our community understands that safety doesn’t come from walls, it comes from meaningful engagement and understanding.
