Middle School Classroom Chronicle

In connection with our science unit focused on Lake Merritt, our students experience the Glen Echo Creek watershed walk. Our field study gives students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with the world around them by exploring the length of the Glen Echo Creek watershed. Along the walk, students trace the path of the creek, observe how water moves through the landscape, and notice how human development has changed the natural environment. They also learn about the history of the area, from its early use as animal trails and footpaths to the city streets and neighborhoods we see today. 

Along the way, students collect water samples to track water quality and practice scientific thinking by asking questions, making observations, and using environmental clues to understand where the creek flows, even when it is hidden. This experience helps students see the important relationship between natural systems and human impact, while deepening their understanding of why protecting local waterways like Lake Merritt matters.
