Middle School Classroom Chronicle

Fitness through Play
Debbie Meyer, Grades 6-8 Physical Education

As a St. Paul’s middle school teacher, I have a unique opportunity to encourage every kid to enjoy more physical activity. St. Paul’s middle school PE is focused on fitness with an emphasis on fitness through play. When kids play, it provides them with an opportunity to move their bodies in a way that builds a foundation for lifelong wellness.

Play builds healthy habits. When play is consistent and fun, kids develop a positive relationship with movement that supports long-term physical health.

Play is for everyone. At St. Paul’s students engage in a variety of sports and games. We have units such as soccer, basketball, v0lleyball, whiffle ball, etc, and we also play a lot of movement games such as capture the flag, soul survivor, dodgeball games, etc.

Through play, students model active behavior, motivate their peers, and build confidence in leading.

While my philosophy is fitness through play, I strive to make sure students develop an understanding of healthy physical habits. With this in mind, students warm up properly with movement and mobility exercises and participate in strength exercises which will allow their bodies to play even more!
