Middle School Classroom Chronicle

In Sixth Grade, we study Ancient History and one of our guiding questions is what makes a civilization? By applying the concepts of cultural universals– such as trade, art, and political organization– we study various ancient cultures from around the world. 

This current unit includes the Ohlone people and culture who have been here in the Bay Area for thousands of years. Students first examined artifacts from the Hayward Area Historical Society. These items included handmade mortar and pestles, acorn soup culinary equipment, and other items. 

Then, they met with Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino, the co-founders of Cafe Ohlone. Our guest speakers spoke of Ohlone food traditions and it’s ancient connection to the local ecology of the Bay Area.

Using these sources, Students will finally present their understanding of both What makes a civilization? And What does it mean to be native? in our upcoming sixth grade Chapel.
