Lower School Classroom Chronicle

This spring, our second graders stepped into the role of researchers, authors, and scientists as they created their own informational “All About” animal books! The excitement and curiosity in the classroom has been contagious as students explored fascinating facts about animals they care deeply about. We began the process by modeling how readers gather information from nonfiction texts, notice important details, and then transform that learning into their own words to teach others. Our young writers worked hard to grow their informational writing skills, especially paragraph writing, which is an important end-of-second-grade expectation. Each student wrote at least three chapters about their animal, showing wonderful growth in organizing ideas, elaborating with facts, and writing with greater independence and confidence. Along the way, students also explored many engaging nonfiction text features such as diagrams, maps, labels, glossaries, and tables of contents to make their books even more informative and authentic. Beyond writing, this project gave students meaningful opportunities to practice collaboration by giving and receiving peer feedback, revising and editing their work, and preparing their books for publication. One of the most joyful parts of the project was bringing their learning to life through the creation of detailed animal habitats, carefully designed to match the environments their animals call home.
