Lower School Classroom Chronicle

Our fourth graders recently completed a creative drawing project called “Scenery in a Shape.” Students chose a shape such as a circle, diamond, or heart and designed a detailed landscape inside it. They explored how artists use foreground, middle ground, and background to show depth in a drawing.

To add richness and texture, students practiced several line techniques, including hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling. These techniques helped them create shadows, dimension, and movement within their scenes.

One exciting challenge in this project was having one object intentionally break out of the shape, such as a tree branch extending past the edge or a cloud floating beyond the border. This added a dynamic touch and encouraged students to think creatively about composition.

Overall, this project helped students strengthen their drawing skills, understand how artists build depth, and experiment with expressive line work. Their finished pieces are full of imagination and thoughtful detail.
