Support in Kindergarten includes pulling out small groups of students who need extra attention understanding the letter/sound correspondence including writing letters and words, learning to blend sounds to sound out CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant words), and supporting teachers with materials that help all children develop phonemic and phonological awareness.
In First and Second Grade, we continue the practice of pulling out students in small groups who are not yet reading and writing grade-level text. We work with families to keep them informed of progress, accommodations that are implemented in the classroom, and making suggestions for at home practice/support.
Learning Services in Third and Fourth Grade is a mix of pull out and push in support. We shift to putting in place as many recommendations as possible, using psychological assessments gathered by the family. Our Learning Care Specialists work with teachers to implement the Learning Care Plan.
Learning Services in Fifth Grade is a mix of pull-out and push-in support, consisting primarily of writing and math assistance. Communication with teachers, educational and mental health therapists, outside tutors, and administration is ongoing and includes encouraging and teaching students how to utilize self-advocacy skills, as well as preparing students for the changes and challenges of middle school.
Learning Services in Grades 6-8 focus on utilizing neuro-psychological testing to provide specific, directed interventions for students with learning differences. Through the structure that is provided by the classroom teachers, administration support, and the learning specialist, challenges are addressed using accommodations, modifications, and self-advocacy skills. Specifically, an individualized Learning Care Plan is developed for each student based on the neuro-psych recommendations. Communication with parents/caregivers, teachers, therapists, and administration is ongoing. Check-ins with the students by the learning specialist occur throughout the week and during times of major assessments/testing/writing assignments.
