Welcome from the Head of School

CHERYL TING
HEAD OF SCHOOL
For fifty years, St. Paul’s has been igniting the spark within every child. From the very beginning, our founders envisioned a school that would reflect and celebrate Oakland’s rich diversity, a place where every child belongs. That bold vision continues to guide us today. In a world that can feel increasingly polarized and isolating, St. Paul’s is a beacon of connection. We teach human literacy: the ability to build meaningful relationships, to nurture empathy, and to honor both one’s own identity and the experiences of others. Our graduates carry this into the world, leading with curiosity, compassion, and respect.
We know that learning, especially in elementary and middle school, is more than mastering academics; it’s about becoming adaptable, purposeful, and grounded in who you are. It’s about learning how to learn. Our students learn best when they connect with and feel known by the adults around them, which is why we invest in a team of expert and human-centered educators who guide and support each child’s journey of growth and identity.
At the heart of our program are three pillars: skills, belonging, and community engagement. Students thrive intellectually and developmentally when they know they can face challenges, contribute meaningfully, and make a difference in the world around them. Rooted in Oakland, the people and the place, our learning ecosystem instills both responsibility and joy.
Our mission comes to life each week in our student-led chapels, where the whole community gathers and students themselves take the role of teacher. These moments remind us that learning is not only about what we know but about who we are and how we live together. This is activated learning—where knowledge, connection, and purpose meet.
I invite you to visit us and experience St. Paul’s for yourself.
With gratitude,
Cheryl Ting
