Community Engaged Learning at St. Paul's

How do I improve the quality of life for others in my community? Imagine if you woke up every day with this question? Imagine if everyone in your neighborhood, in your community, in the world woke up and asked themselves this question, and decidedly did one thing each day to do just that.

Community Engaged Learning is central to who we are, what we do in our classrooms, and how we engage in our neighborhood through partnership and action.

Third Grade Bird Study

The third grade ecological study of the birds of Lake Merritt is a beautiful example of Community Engaged Learning. This longitudinal study in partnership with Cornell University’s Ornithology Lab includes 11 birds of Lake Merritt. Students collect and submit data on a bi-weekly basis in order to understand migratory patterns and habitat over periods of years. They partner with the Audubon Society in their habitat restoration project. Their collaboration with the Sixth Grade water ecology study expands both their science studies using our Buddy System. Because Community Engaged Learning is embedded into the curriculum, learning, partnership, action, impact, and outcomes deepen and expand.

Third Grade Study in the Spotlight

Third grade's bird study was recognized this week with an award of ten Celestron binoculars by the Cornell Lab for Ornithology, one of a dozen schools across the nation to win the grant.

For thirty years, our third grade students have trained their sights on the birds of Lake Merritt, the oldest wild bird sanctuary in the country. Every two weeks this year, they walk the shoreline to identify migrating and overwintering birds and and enter their count to Cornell's citizen science app, eBird

For more information on the bird study, watch our very own Kate Foley's interview with KTVU, which she delivered just a few weeks ago (Winter Break 2023).
