Students and families gathered at Lakeside Park for an outdoor chapel to observe the beginning of the Lunar New Year celebration with speakers from the Asian Student Union and two lion dancers from San Francisco!
As a lower school we have begun to use a portion of time on Friday mornings after Chapel dedicated to what we call Friday Community Flex Time, a common time when the Lower School can come together as a community in different configurations and work on common projects and activities.
The whole Middle School is reading Flying Lessons . In reading these short stories by award winning diverse authors, the Language Arts department decided to have our students explore their identity through literature discussions, activities and poetry. We also invited local poets to class to learn about Poetry Slams and to get feedback on their Poetry Slam performances. For our cumulative activity, we all came together this last Wednesday for our first ever Poetry Slam in the park. Middle school students and 4th and 5th graders were in the audience to support 16 St. Paul's extordnary poets. Some of these poets will be performing at Storefront Records Open Mic & Market Place this Saturday at 12:40. Come out and support our St. Paul's Poets. See you there!
Sixth and Seventh Grade science teachers Tony Bald and Marianne Miller invited students for a hands-on look at Lake Merritt colonizers of a plate that was submerged one year ago. Joined by biologists from San Francisco's Cal Academy of Science and citizen scientists from the Lake Merritt Institute, our students were able to identify invasive and non-invasive species of the intertidal zone from the boathouse right in our neighborhood.
All of our students--Kindergarten through Eighth Grade--gathered in Lakeside Park for a brief outdoor chapel to discuss climate change while older students prepared for the global Fridays For Future climate march. Students have been studying ways to help heal our land and climate to help ensure a fruitful future for us all. They created posters, speeches and more; Fourth to Eighth Grade students met with Community Engagement Director Yvonne Cazares on the steps of City Hall.
After Opening Chapel in Lakeside Park on the first day of school, Father Mauricio opens the church sanctuary with the Kindergarten class this week to familiarize everyone with the reasons behind the chapel elements that we experience each week. He'll have an audience while the rest of our students watch from the classrooms. For more about our chapel experience, click here.
Learn more about how we prepare our students to be confident and skilled learners who are active citizens of the world. Schedule a tour or come to an open house to see St. Paul's students and teachers in action.
