St. Paul’s School recognizes teaching is an academic profession. In 2001, St. Paul’s initiated an onsite Teacher Research Project to support and honor teachers as professionals and scholars. This program is modeled on the professional support provided to instructors at the university level. In the program, each participant individually pursues a burning question of classroom practice through a systematic yearlong research project. These projects have included a study of adolescent girls’ perceptions of body image as presented in the media, an exploration of the academic benefits of cross-grade education projects, creating a respectful communications system in the classroom, and an examination of how eighth grade student’s perceived knowledge of algebra is reflected in their test scores and grades.

Each year, up to ten teachers participate in the program. They work individually on their projects, meet every other week with the project coordinator and meet monthly as a group. Both experienced and new teachers participate.
