Approach and Mastery
St. Paul’s School middle school students receive two grades in each subject, one for mastery and one for approach. This unique marking system reflects the School belief that lifelong learning skills are as important in education and academic achievement as mastery of a particular subject matter. Mastery grades reflect the skills and knowledge achieved by the student-–a combination of research papers, tests, oral presentations, group work, and homework. The grade is based on student performance. Approach grades reflect the student’s learning skills and preparedness–dedication to complete assignments, respect and work well with others, participate, take risks, concentrate, and seek help when needed. St. Paul's School believes that every student can get an A in approach. If a student works hard on approach, mastery grades inevitably improve. Both grades are valued equally, and the final grade is determined by averaging the two grades.
