Susan Porter, St. Paul’s Sixth Grade Teacher, on Teaching:
Teaching is really hard, but there are certain moments that hook you in, and you can’t stop teaching.
It was the last day of school - class day at Muir Beach - and everyone was exhausted. A group of about 10 kids and I went on a hike. We got to a bridge and there was hemlock growing. We’d studied Ancient Greece that year, but not Socrates in detail, so I mentioned that Socrates had been put to death by a poison made out of hemlock. They asked, ‘Why did they put him to death?’
Two reasons, I told them. One: for disrespecting the gods. And two: for corrupting the youth. They started to debate what it was that Socrates could have said. They generated the entire debate. I said we’d better get back to the beach to eat snacks and roast marshmallows, but they insisted on staying. They stood there for 20 minutes debating this.
This was the last day of school!
That’s why I love teaching.
