Susan Porter, Sixth Grade Science and Math Teacher and Master Scheduler, is in her 19th year at St. Paul’s. She holds a BA from UC Berkeley and a teaching credential from CSU-Hayward. Susan has been a member of the Lake Merritt Institute’s Board of Directors for seven years. In 2004, she received an Environmental Award for Excellence from the Environmental Protection Agency for her science curriculum related to Lake Merritt. She enjoys gardening, reading, biking, hiking, playing her violin, pie making, and planning outings next year with her grandchild-to-be.

Nicole Start is the Sixth Grade Humanities Teacher and in her fourth year at St. Paul’s School. She grew up in Oakland, then went east to Williams College for her BA. She couldn't stay away from the Bay Area, however, so she returned to get her teaching credential from Holy Names University. She has worked at schools in Massachussetts, Connecticut, San Leandro, and elsewhere in Oakland. Nicole speaks French (she enjoyed living in Paris for a year), loves hiking in the regional parks, and enjoys reading, sewing, and eating delicious food with friends and family.
