Administration
Karan A. Merry is serving St. Paul’s as Head of School for the ninth year. Karan previously served as Head of School at Kent Place School in New Jersey and The Chestnut Hill School in Massachusetts. She earned her BA at Salem State College in Massachusetts and her MA in Elementary Education at Lesley College, Cambridge, MA. Karan is a past chair of the National Association of Independent Schools and serves on the boards of the National Association of Episcopal Schools and the California Association of Independent Schools. Locally, she serves on the boards of Aim High, Facing History and Ourselves, and College Preparatory School. Her personal interests include the performing arts, sports, and strength training. She enjoys spending time with her family, particularly her grandsons.
Josh Stern, in his ninth year at St. Paul's, is in his first year as Assistant Head of School. Previously, Josh was Director of Administrative Programs. He began at St. Paul's as sixth grade humanities teacher. Josh earned an MA in educational policy from Stanford University and a BA from Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
Judith Stone, in her twenty-first year at St. Paul's, begins her sixteenth year as Director of Middle School. Judy previously taught fifth grade and served as Intermediate School Team Coordinator. She received her BA from Stanford University and her Elementary Teaching Credential from UC Berkeley. She is president of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Bach Choir. She enjoys skiing, water sports, hiking, gardening, and spending time with her family. She roams long distances on foot with her dog.
Laroilyn (Lee) Davis is Director of Lower School for the third year. From 1990-1998, Lee served in many capacities at the School including Assistant Head; Director of Lower School; Director of High School Placement; Director of Admissions; and Middle School social studies teacher. In addition, Lee completed two terms on St. Paul’s Board of Trustees. She earned an MA in Education from Stanford University and a BS in Education from Wittenberg University. After leaving the School in 1998, Lee was Executive Director of the Multicultural Alliance and Head of School at Berkeley Montessori School. Lee enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, reading, and traveling.
Carol Luther returns for her seventh year at St. Paul’s as Chaplain and Director of Service Learning. Carol received her BA from Scripps College and her MDiv from Church Divinity School of the Pacific. She was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1999 and received a certificate in Dreamwork in 2006. Last year, she introduced dream work into the fourth grade curriculum as a project in the Teacher Research Group. She spent the summer of 2008 as a parish priest in the Alaska Native village of Grayling on the Yukon River. She loves dogs, dreaming, community, and Mother Earth.
